e-Portfolio Definition

An ePortfolio (electronic portfolio) is a digital collection of work that documents and showcases knowledge, skills, and abilities, and their growth over time. An ePortfolio may include such things as:

 

  • Writing samples (research papers, essays, fiction, reflections, journals)

  • Photos/slideshows/videos/audio or other types of media files

  • Research projects

  • Links to blogs, web pages, or other online content

 

These “artifacts” are usually accompanied by reflection on how or why the item is included in the ePortfolio.


ePortfolios @ UPM

The ePortfolio Program at Universiti Putra Malaysia is designed to:


  • support students, faculty, and staff create repositories that promote teaching, learning, and assessment.


The ePortfolio will be used by faculty and as a resource by students in:


  • documenting,

  • sharing,

  • reflecting on/deepening their learning.


Students use it to showcase:


  • talents,

  • skills,

  • abilities


  • Successful implementation of the ePortfolio Program:


  • Improves student success by helping students:

 

    a. Align their work/effort with desired learning outcomes

    b. Become self-directed learners

    c. Develop an integrative perspective of their university career

    d. Deepen learning

    e. Present themselves digitally

    f. Enjoy the creative process of learning.


  • Provides students with a tool to showcase their knowledge, skills and abilities for employers, graduate schools and others.

  • Showcases the value of education to students, parents, employers, and the community.

  • Enhances university engagement with the community and improves reporting the impact of the university on the region.

  • Improves the university’s infrastructure for assessment and accreditation.

Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia has recently adopted a cloud based ePortfolio system from Pathbrite. An e-Portfolio (electronic portfolio) is an electronic collection of your work . An e-Portfolio may include submitted assignments, course papers and projects in a variety of formats, independent research projects, and reflections on those submissions. You can use your e-Portfolio to: collect and share your work with faculty, as a tool for inviting collaboration and feedback, as a professional portfolio to share with graduate schools and prospective employers, and as a record of your academic progress.

Students can use their ePortfolio to: collect and share their work with you, as a tool for inviting collaboration and feedback, as a professional portfolio to share with graduate schools and prospective employers, and as a record of their academic progress. e-Portfolios can foster and provide evidence of student learning across all curricular, co-curricular, and institution-wide outcomes. ePortfolios enhance learning and provide opportunities for assessment of learning in the following ways:


  • Represent multiple learning styles, modes of accomplishment, and quality of work accomplished by students.

  • Provide structure around clear expectations and articulated goals.

  • Offer the potential for progressive formative assessments that foster improvement while learning is still in process.

  • Encourage reflection on learning as well as personal goal-setting and future planning.

  • Facilitate program and institutional review through sampling and aggregation of data from individual student portfolios.
