Kursus ini memberikan kepada pelajar pemahaman pelbagai aspek prinsip sistem bioreaktor yang diperlukan dalam menjalankan sesuatu proses pengkulturan. Aspek yang akan dibincangkan termasuklah fenomena pengangkutan, pengudaraan dan pencampuran di dalam sistem bioreaktor, ciri rekabentuk bioreaktor aduk mekanik serta sistem kawalannya. Pelbagai rekabentuk bioreaktor selain daripada proses pensterilan, dan teknik aseptik dalam fermentasi serta penyediaan inokulum juga akan dibincangkan. Keperluan rekabentuk bioreaktor yang berbagai untuk pengkulturan sel yang berlainan (mikroorganisma, tumbuhan dan haiwan) dan mod operasi yang berlainan (sesekelompok, suapan sesekelompok dan selanjar). This course exposes student to various aspects of basic principles in bioreactor system, which is prerequisite in the development of fermentation processes. The aspects that will be discussed include transport phenomena in bioreactor, aeration and mixing in a culture, design features of stirred tank fermenter as well as its instrumentation and control system. The bioreactor designs, other than stirred tank reactor such as air-lift and packed-bed bioreactor as well as sterilization process and aseptic technique in fermentation and inoculum preparation will also be discussed. The specific requirements in bioreactor design in relation to the cultivation of different cell systems (microbial, plant and animal) and different modes- of bioreactor operation (batch, fed-batch and continuous) will also be highlighted.
